ENCOURAGING ERIN - Erin Vineyard, 27, whom many know from her employment at Speedy Mart in Cave Junction, is recovering from surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from her brain. Her elder sister, Casey Lunt, said that it’s an especially bad type which has spread into her spine. Erin is in Portland, where during the next 12 months she will undergo intense chemotherapy, followed by six weeks of radiation therapy. She’s being treated at Oregon Health & Science University. She and her husband, Kevin, have two boys, 10 and 11. Kevin works at Bridgeview Vineyards Winery, and so has insurance to help cover some medical expenses. But there are numerous other costs. An account in Erin’s name is set up, and donations can be made at any branch of Home Valley Bank. Plus, there’s a donation can at Speedy Mart.

TREES, PLEASE - A public workshop to delve into public land restoration ideas for Wild Rivers Ranger District, based in Cave Junction, will be explored at Illinois Valley High School on Friday, July 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The gathering will be hosted by the U.S. Forest Service. “I look forward to working with the communities as partners in having our public land become more resilient,” said Joel King, district ranger. SELMA CLASS - A free food preservation class will be taught Saturday, Aug. 4 at Selma Center’s commercial kitchen by Oregon State University Extension Service. ‘FOR JANNA’ - The Susan B. Koman Cancer Foundation’s S.W. Oregon Chapter will be the recipient of proceeds from a benefit in memory of Janna L. Carter. The fund-raising dinner will be held Friday, Aug. 3 by Weeping Spruce Herb Farm at 27893 Redwood Hwy. near Great Cats World Park. The menu offers a full-course dinner, either vegetarian or meat entrée. Wine will be sold; complimentary nonalcoholic beverages will be included with dinner. PLAYGROUND NEWS - For those wondering what happened to the teeter-totters and the metal animals on springs at Jubilee Park; they had to be removed. Mayor Tony Paulson said that the city’s insurance carrier mandated removal of the somewhat older equipment because of liability issues. The city hopes to be able to announce a plan for new, improved items sometime down the line.
