‘Tom’ Morrissey
A memorial service for Cave Junction resident Thomas F. “Tom” Morrissey, 73, who died Monday, July 23, 2007 in a Grants Pass nursing home, will be held Thursday, July 26 at 3 p.m. at Fountain of Life Assembly of God Church in Cave Junction.
Mr. Morrissey, retired from the U.S. Navy after a 24-year career, was born Jan. 1, 1934 in Omaha, Neb. He was born at 12:01 a.m., making him the first baby born that year in Omaha.
He was proud of his Navy service. After his retirement in April 1975, he worked in the Bay Area of California for Shell Oil Co., Kaiser Center Inc., Mt. Diablo Hospital, and AltaBates & Herrick Hospital. He and his wife, Sandy, moved to Cave Junction in July 1994.
Mr. Morrissey became interested in golfing thanks to Rex Denham, former PGA pro at Illinois Valley Golf Course. “Tom” was known for never doing anything second-best; he always strived for the best. Besides enjoying golf, he served as president of the golf association board “off and on.”
Besides his wife of 37 years, Sandy, of Cave Junction, Mr. Morrissey is survived by two daughters, Linda Witmond, of Alpharetta, Ga., and Shelley Johnson, of Valley Springs, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to The American Cancer Society, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Illinois Valley Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
Marie E. Cole
Marie Evelyn Cole, 92, a 57-year resident of O’Brien, died at her home Thursday, July 19, 2007.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, July 24 at Laurel Cemetery in Cave Junction. Illinois Valley Funeral Directors handled arrangements.
Mrs. Cole was born on Oct. 16, 1914 to Albert & Mabel Vaughn in Bellingham, Wash. In November 1934 she married Ronald E. Cole in Yreka, Calif. She had lived in O’Brien since 1950.
She was a member of the Baptist Church in O’Brien for many years. She taught Sunday school; and enjoyed gardening, embroidering and baking.
Mrs. Cole is survived by her two sons, Ronald Cole, of O’Brien, and Roy Cole, of Salem; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death.
