Last summer, Louis Swisher and Carol Butcher opened Crystal Kaleidoscope at 18435 Redwood Hwy. in Selma.
And this summer, they’re hosting a drawing and giving away $1,000 in prizes to celebrate the business’ one-year anniversary.
Swisher said that the drawing, which will feature 40 prizes, is to thank Illinois Valley residents for their support during the past 12 months.
“The feedback we’ve gotten from tourists and locals has been very positive,” Swisher said.
He and Butcher have operated three stores in locations including Santa Cruz, Calif., and Gardnerville, Nev.
“Every time we open one, we learn something different,” Swisher said.
He prides himself on the store’s merchandise, noting that all the stones, beads and jewelry in stock are hand-picked for quality and value.
“That’s how I’ve done it for 25 years,” Swisher said.
Crystal Kaleidoscope carries more than 600 styles of stone beads. The store is constantly adding new stones, beads and jewelry.
Other inventory includes light-reflective stones, plasma lights, disco lights, crystal grow kits, and educational toys and books for children.
“There’s something for everybody that comes through the door,” Swisher said. “We want everybody to leave with a smile on their face.”
An entire section of the store is appropriately devoted to kaleidoscopes, with more than 100 in stock.
“It’s probably the largest kaleidoscope collection in Oregon,” Swisher said.
A rough rock yard was added in February, with large decorative rocks for collectors and cutters. A “crystal cave” inside the store is nearly completed, and is already proving to be quite an attraction.
“It’s a darkroom for stone lamps, light boxes and crystals that light up,” Swisher said.
Entries for the anniversary drawing will be accepted until Aug. 30, with the drawing held the following day. Anyone 18 years or older will be automatically entered into the drawing for free just by visiting the store, and additional entries will be made for anyone who makes a purchase of $10 or more.
Prizes include glass paperweights and purple amethyst.
Swisher said that the drawing is merely a way of expressing appreciation for the store’s loyal customers.
“Moving to the Illinois Valley last year was one of the best decisions we ever made,” Swisher said. “The people here are wonderful.”
