New store, local success story

There’s a classic newspaper headline -- “Local boy makes good” -- that applies to CJ Video Mart & Radio Shack at the north end of Downtown Cave Junction.

Except in this case, the headline would read, “Local boy and girl make good.” That’s because CJ Video Mart & Radio Shack is a real hometown success, now celebrating a grand opening through Friday, Nov. 16 of its newly built facility.

And for co-owners and operators Bill & Chris
Coultas, using “local contractors” has proven to be a plus factor. As well, they purposely chose local folks.

“It’s important to us to support our community,” said Bill, “because it has supported us. We wouldn’t be where we are without the backing of the valley.”

As for the “local boy and girl” angle, Bill & Chris are graduates of I.V. High School. She was in the Class of 1981; he graduated in ‘82. Plus their daughter, Ricci, was in the Class of 2005; and their son, Matthew, is a freshman at IVHS.

With two exceptions, Illinois Valley companies handled the project. Design and construction was by A Better Builder owned by Bruce Donelson; and the conceptual design was by Doug Kendall Design.

Other I.V. firms involved were Robert Hirning’s Country Plumbing, Meidinger Concrete Construction, Hometowne Interiors, Camp’s Custom Excavation, Kerby Electric, and Illinois Valley Building Supply.

Additionally, Rogue Valley Heating & Air Conditioning, of Grants Pass, represented by O’Brien resident Dave Bullock; and Moser Paving Inc., of Grants Pass, in connection with Cave Junction resident Dave Britt.

Plus, the landscaping is to be installed by Selma resident Ted Orndoff.

The new CJ Video Mart & Radio Shack store contains 4,000 square feet of space, double the size of the previous building, which was razed. A huge selection of products is available, just in time not only for the holiday season, but for year-round needs, including gift-giving.

With regard to using local contractors, Bill noted that not only did he and Chris realize lesser costs than they had anticipated, but that if there ever are any problems, there will be a quick “local” response.

Besides all that, he said, the contractors have a project of which they are justifiably proud -- and it’s right in Downtown CJ.
