From quilts to ice cream socials, from log furniture to pine needle baskets, this month’s Second Friday Art Walk will celebrate the Americas and the Pacific Rim on July 11 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Illinois Valley Visitor Center will host two outstanding artisans. Diane Lea has utilized various facets of “Iris-Folding,” an Asian paper craft, in her new collection of framed miniature kimonos. Longtime I.V. booster Delbert Kauffman, founder of Kauffman Wood Products, will display select items from his “Cave Bear Collection,” designed to benefit Oregon Caves Chateau.
Terry Lee’s “Pacific Rim Perspectives” in paintings, photos and giclee prints will enhance the front entrance to Taylor’s Country Store. The Buck Harms Band will play Country-Western style as diners enjoy veggie or Italian sausage lasagna or regular entrees. Two doors north, Changes Art Gallery will present July’s Second Friday Featured Artist, Pearlene Gavlik with her lush floral watercolors as well as a cross-section of other I.V. artists.
Ravenswood Gallery again will host Art Walk sensations Eric, Matty, Sunrise & Dave playing contemporary and traditional instruments. Inside, visitors can view the leatherwork, art glass, burlwood furniture and painting representing the talents of six I.V. artists. Next door, Suzanne Vautier’s beautiful vases, rattles and bird house gourd art will be featured at Embroidered Adaptations.
Treehouse Florist & Gifts will welcome Linda DeLettera’s “Yellow Rose Dream Quilts” in heritage and contemporary designs.
At the Josephine County Bldg., Illinois River Valley Arts Council (IRVAC) will host an “Umpqua Ice Cream Social” featuring high-quality ice cream bars at a reduced price. Proceeds will help support Art Walk, and visitors can peruse information tables for the I.V. Section of Boys & Girls Club and the Library Committee. T-shirts, book markers and magnets, and the “Valley Girls” quilt raffle also will be features.
The free art activity at the county building will be to decorate a shoe or two for IRVAC’s “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” contest and silent auction held annually during Blackberry Festival. The public can bring decorative materials, and a shoe or pair that need to be improved. Some materials will be provided.
Crocker Financial Services and Crocker-Litak H&R Block will celebrate a grand opening in their new location across from the CJ Post Office on Lister Street. Special featured artist is Ted’s son, Oley Crocker, who has just graduated from college with a minor in art. Visitors are welcome to view Oley’s pencil sketches in this brand-new building.
Art Walk also will welcome Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance (IVSHA) at the corner of Kerby and Lister streets, next to the DMV office. Visitors will see the first in a series of “Healing Arts” mini-workshops during Art Walk. This month, Dr. Margaret Philhower, a naturopath, will offer “Home Remedies You Didn’t Know You Have,” in three 15-minute sessions during the evening at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30.
Featured artist at the IVHSA site will be Mary Reynolds showing her intricately designed “Fantasy Beaded Jewelry” with half of sale proceeds going to benefit the alliance.
On the east side of Redwood Hwy., across from Taylor’s, the I.V. Senior Thrift Shop will exhibit Rachel Goodman’s textured acrylic and casein paintings in a “Natural Impressions” show.
Farther north, Produce Plus will celebrate its grand opening featuring local and organic produce, summer clothing, “plus” more. Produce Plus is at Puff ‘n’ Stuff next to Bagel Junction. Next door, Special Productions, adjacent to SOFCU Community Credit Union, will feature pine needle basket-weaving demonstrations by Susan Freeman.
Mid-town activities will include a celebration of the life and art of Frida Kahlo at Nacho Mama’s, serving full menu and bar until 10 p.m. Guest artist Alan Laurie will have a show and sale of his Mexican-Indian inspired Ojos de Dios with a free drawing at 8 for one of the colorful Eye of God mandalas.
Next door, Tropical Island Tans will present Jim Lettis and his Images of Nature photography.
This month’s “regular business hours” exhibits include the Eye Care Group on Caves Hwy. hosting Linda Stevenson’s oil paintings of florals and landscapes. And Home Valley Bank will display Deborah Dawson’s new collection of Illinois Valley Nature watercolors.
Second Friday Artwalk is sponsored by the Illinois River Valley Arts Council, with support from Evergreen Federal Bank, Jefferson State Financial Group, R.H. Ziller & Co. and Umpqua Dairy Products. For more information, phone 592-4444 during regular business hours or visit www.irvac.com.
