State Representative Ron Maurer

Ron Maurer (R-Grants Pass) announced that the Oregon Rural Health Care Coalition (ORHCC) has endorsed his Health Access Oregon legislative concept designed to expand health and dental care access to uninsured Oregonians.

Regarding the plan, E.E. “Ed” Patterson, director of ORHCC, said:

“Oregon Rural Health Coalition is pleased to endorse Rep. Ron Maurer’s proposed legislation to create the Health Access Oregon Fund.

“On a per capita basis, rural Oregon has more uninsured and a larger number of government-insured than most urban areas.

“This legislation,” said Patterson, “addresses the issue of government reimbursing rural providers less than their cost for providing care for government-insured patients. It also increases funding to provide basic health-and-dental insurance to families who are categorically eligible for federal matching funds.

“These enhancements would dramatically increase the ability of rural communities to recruit and retain medical and dental providers, which will reduce the number of uninsured rural Oregonians.”

As announced recently, resources to fund Health Access Oregon will come from a new “fair share” requirement that will be applied to the 46,600 public employees who receive health-and-dental benefits from the Public Employees Benefits Board (PEBB).

Said Maurer, “I look forward to promoting the concept as a part of a viable solution to Gov. Kulongoski’s call for ideas on how to increase health-care access to uninsured Oregon families.”
